Description

Cobblestone figures prominently in the appearance of this onestory Craftsman bungalow. The building is gabled, with a pair of gables facing front. Notched bargeboards, exposed beams, and latticed vents in the gable ends characterize the roof treatment. The smaller of the front gables is offset to the north and tops the former porch. Now enclosed by a band of casement windows, the space is defined by a cobblestone wall anchored by heavy pedestals on which paired posts sit. Apparently a pergola extends to the south; a third pedestal with posts flanks a raised entry bay. This space, too, has been enclosed with casement windows. Sheathed in clapboard, the building is accented by a cobblestone chimney on the south elevation. The bungalow is in good condition. RESEARCH NOTES: Formerly known as 465, this bungalow was one of the five that appeared on the west side of this block of Eighth Avenue in the 1912 Sanborns. The owner at the time was the well-known Upland contractor, William C. Cline. Although he apparently did not live in the house, Cline may have been responsible for its construction. He was the first owner following the subdivision of the tract. The property then changed hands several times within the space of a few years. The owners included L.R. Bradley, B.H. Spicer, A.E. Huntington, and F.C. and Clara C. Thomas.
